Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has had a profound effect on many of its practitioners. The education you receive on the mats can be priceless. The enormous atmosphere and friendship that is built on the mat, has caused Jiu Jitsu to become one of the fastest growing sports in the US, its also become a way of life for many.
Jiu Jitsu was originally an art designed for warfare and developed in Japan during the Fuedal period. In 1925 the Gracie brothers opened their first school, and Jiu Jitsu was transformed into a more effective martial art known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. What made this version so effective was the constant exposure of it practitioners to real life situations. During this time the Gracie family would issue an open challenge to all others to fight without rules, “If you want to get you face beaten and well smashed, your___kicked, and your arm broken, contact Carlos Gracie at the address…”(Brazilian newspaper ad, circa 1920’s). In these no rules or “vale tudo’ fights, the Gracie family would hone and evaluate the techniques of their fighting art. Which has now become more commonly known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
